What Is Light Therapy?

Alternative forms of healing therapy are increasing as medical technology is advancing the science of it. One such form which may be of your interest is "light therapy". Light therapy is a non-invasive, safe and painless treatment method for a variety of conditions including SAD and certain skin conditions. SAD stands for seasonal affective disorder and is a form of depression that hits sufferers in the winter months, which is why this condition is often called the winter blues. Experts believe this disorder may be caused by a lack of sun exposure, which can be made up for in a couple of ways.

For example, if you live in a location with lots of bright sunlight every day your doctor may recommend you go outside more. You may be prescribed something like 20 minutes of direct sunlight every day. However in locations where the sun isn't always shining this can be difficult or impossible to achieve. The solution lies in the use of special light therapy boxes which emit light similar to that of the sun. All you do is sit in front of the lamp or illuminated box for a specific amount of time each day. These lamps are designed to be easy on the eyes and don't harm your skin the way unprotected sun exposure can.

Another use for light therapy is in the fight against acne. Researchers have discovered that the acne bacteria is easily killed with the use of blue light. Now dermatologists everywhere are offering blue light acne treatments. There are even home use lamps that feature blue and even red lights. Red light is sometimes used after blue light to increase the favorable effects of the treatment. In addition, red light can also be used for anti-aging purposes. Red light may help smooth facial wrinkles and rejuvenate the look of the skin.

Now that you know what is light therapy you are ready to talk to your doctor if this is something that interests you. The first thing he or she will do is a thorough evaluation of your condition. From there he or she will establish whether or not you are a good candidate for light therapy. If so, you will be prescribed light treatment to suit your needs. This treatment may be done at your doctor's or dermatologists office, or possibly at your home. Most of the time patients being treated for SAD use light boxes at home. Light therapy is an easy and convenient therapy for many people.
